Climate Utopias is a visual arts festival organised by VTRY (Lahti Association of Photographic Artists) as part of the official program of The European Green Capital 2021 project in Lahti, Finland, 1. - 30.11.2021. We invite artists, researchers and anyone working with mediums that manifest in visual forms to envision new horizons of possibility in a future imposed by the eco-catastrophe. Festival brief:
The eco-crisis has become a standing topic in public discourse, but the future images these discussions project look grim and inescapable. It has been said that we can only build the futures that we can imagine. This is why we are organising a festival with space for reverie, fantasies and speculation. We wish to see more people feel empowered in imagining alternative scenarios and shifting away from harmful defaults, and in this way expand social imagination and the imagery about what we consider possible.
We are looking for proposals that embody radical change, advocate for political, social, and economic equality of all people, while diverting to a hopeful image of humanity amidst the eco-crisis. We invite artists, researchers, collectives and anyone working with these topics in a visual way to present us with your proposals, openings and ideas.
The festival is open to visual presentations in different mediums. We are especially looking for proposals that examine these subjects using lens-based and/or other medias (eg. photography, video, animation, photogrammetry, 3D, new media). We warmly invite proposals for both finished or in-progress works. VTRY will assist the artist in producing their work for exhibition. Four artists/collectives will be selected by a jury for exhibitions at different venues around Lahti in November 2021.
The selected artists/collectives will:
- Have their work exhibited at the festival in November 2021
- Receive an exhibition fee of 500 euros
- Have their work exhibited at the festival in November 2021
- Receive an exhibition fee of 500 euros
- Have their work produced for exhibition by VTRY
- Be invited to talk about their work and the themes around it in an episode of the festival podcast
Participation in the Open Call is free of charge and the deadline for submissions is 7.9.2021.
