The short film “10 Years of Art Residency in Narva” looks into the beginnings of this creative hub at the border town

05.01.2026

The short film premiered on Estonian National Broadcasting TV channel ETV2 on January 3 and it was created for the anniversary of the Narva Art Residency which has now been operating for more than 10 years. The 15-minute short film can be viewed on the Jupiter webpage and NART channels. It helps to introduce NART to both domestic and international audiences, but also has a broader mission to explain the concept of creative residencies and their role for practicing artists.

The story begins with the visit of Estonian Ministry of Culture to Narva in 2013. They visited, among other things, the empty villa of the former Kreenholm director. This was a good fit for Tõnis Saadoja’s exhibition, which took place the following year. The exhibition was extremely popular and brought together audiences from both the region and the capital. Such a successful start gave impetus to make this house into an art residency. The Estonian Academy of Arts took the initiative under its wing. With the support of international artists, NART has been spreading Estonian and Narvian stories to the wider world, and has been providing solid support for integration in Narva through culture.

The film features interviews with Kreenholm developer Jaanus Mikk, the Ministry of Culture's art advisor Maria-Kristiina Soomre, EKA’s vice-rector Anne Pikkov, artist Tõnis Saadoja and the head of the Narva art residency Johanna Rannula.

The film was created by Kristiina Iilane and Niels Gramsen from Gram Media OÜ, and it was supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
