Similarly to plants desiring to bud in spring artists also wish to present their work in public and the art audience is interested in get the idea of what is going on in the field of art as well as to meet old favourites and discover newcomers in art. This year’s spring exhibition of the Estonian Artists’ Association exhibited the work by 76 artists, including both acknowledged artists from previous generations (Enn Põldroos, Tiit Pääsuke, Maret Olvet, Silvi Liiva, Leonhard Lapin, Jüri Ojaver, Siim-Tanel Annus, Tiiu Kirsipuu) as well as young artists (Veiko Klemmer, Anna Kaarma, Mihkel Ilus, Elis Saareväli, Britta Benno, Maria Sidljarevitsh, Elo-Mai Mikelsaar). The exhibition jury (Kaido Ole, Indrek Grigor, Kaarel Eelma, Elin Kard and Vano Allsalu) selected works to be exhibited among the artwork submitted by almost two hundred artists.
According to best practices, „fresh stuff” was submitted by artists – work that they had created during the last year or two. That applied also to artists from older generations such as Lola Liivat (1928) and Lembit Sarapuu (1930). As usual, the annual exhibition was also open for nonmembers of the Estonian Artists’ Association.
Instead of serving the role of a general overview, the spring exhibition rather belonged to the genre of salon exposition, providing a diverse, emotional excerpt from Estonian contemporary art. The „center of gravity” of the exhibition lied in painting, printmaking and sculpture-installation; works of photography and video were represented as well.
It was possible to see various artists relating to each ohter through their work at Tallinn Art Hall – artists who otherwise would probably never meet in a group or curatorial exhibition. The spring exhibition certainly offered participating artists shoulder to shoulder feeling and somewhat competitive moments; and no doubt that art audience got food for thought and conversation, new experience both for eye and heart, and possibilities for deeply personal interpretations as well as for seeking wider meanings.
