Tarrvi Laamann “ME DEYA / I AM HERE”

Estonian artist, DJ and traveler Tarrvi Laamann, who resides in Jamaica, will open a large comprehensive solo exhibition at Põhjala Galleries on Thursday, August 4. The exhibition will feature a collection of works that have received their initial impulse from the author's travels in very different places around the world. The common feature running through all the creations is that the initial impulse of the paintings is an impression in the printing technique. The common denominator of the exhibition is the word pair ME DEYA - I am here in the Jamaican dialect, which invites the viewer to be in the moment.

“An author who creates with his heart has always captured in his work and precisely the moment when the work is created. The eye contact between the work of art and its observer is a rare and timeless moment, which creates an opportunity to feel what the author has felt during the creation of the work, or to reflect it through the work yourself. Art is a universal language and its recognition does not require a long manual - a good painting is as simple as a smile - a flood of emotions recorded on the canvas and reflected from it. As an author, I wish that the analyzing, planning and evaluating train of thought would come to a stop in front of the work and the everyday hustle and bustle would fade into the background, I wish that my paintings take people to travel to the places where they were born - to their dreams,” comments the author of the works, Tarrvi Laamann, and adds: “If the viewer is interested and wants to explore a little more, at this exhibition we will also talk about different printing techniques through the creations - the very first man-made from the work, the handprint on the wall - monoprint to the very sophisticated Japanese printing technique Mokuhanga out.”

 Tarrvi Laamann (b. 1973) is an artist, DJ and one of the best-known leaders of reggae culture in Estonia. Laamann graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts MA in graphic arts (2000) and has furthered his education in Japan. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Estonian Artists' Union. Since 1998, Laamann has organized the Bashment series of events introducing reggae culture. Tarrvi Laamann's works are influenced by both reggae and his native Estonia. Trips to other places have added bright colors, smells, tastes, warmth and rhythms. All this abundance of color and exoticism combine into a beauty that is more spiritual than decorative. Laamann's works radiate positivity and satisfaction, according to the author, this is his way of improving the world.

 Tarrvi Laamann's creations are exhibited in the PÕHJALA Factory (Marati 5, Tallinn) in a total of three different exhibition spaces, and the exhibitions will remain open until the end of August.
