Tartu Printmaking Festival named after Peeter Allik at the Tartu Art House

06.06.2022

On Friday, 10 June at 6 p.m. Tartu Printmaking Festival “Shadows” named after Peeter Allik will open in the large gallery of Tartu Art House.

For the first time, the Tartu Printmaking Festival bears the name of Peeter Allik in honour of Allik as the founder of the festival. The artist has written about the idea of the festival: “Good old printmaking is an opportunity even when everything else disappears, completely free self-expression, everyone’s own printed press, in the conditions of any democratic or totalitarian organization.”

The festival has been held regularly since 2012 and is scheduled to take place this year in its interdisciplinary spirit throughout the summer. Various exhibitions, international performance actions, a chess tournament named after Peeter Allik and workshops will take place all over the town.

The international exhibition “MASTERS OF LINOCUT AND WOODCUT - Shadows” at the Tartu Art House is curated by Carlos Barberena, who works in Chicago. The exhibition brings together the brightest pearls of the linocut medium around the world.

For the first time, previously unseen video materials made by and with Peeter Allik, interviews and short films directed by Allik will also be on display. The designer of the exhibition is Taje Paldrok.

The opening parade continue at 8 p.m. from Kunstimaja to the exhibition of Anonymous Boh on the second floor of Tartu Kaubamaja and will proceed to the smallest gallery of the Baltic Poissmeeste Maja created by Peeter Allik. Performing artists Danny Gonzalez from the USA, Mathieu Sylvestre from France, Hyunji Park and Jaesik Park from South Korea and Georgi Litvinov will perform.

The festival is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

The exhibition at the Tartu Art House is open until 10 July.
