Vilen Künnapu art exhibition “Nudes in Architecture” in the Sepikoja hall of PÕHJALA Factory

02.02.2022

Wednesday, 02.02. at 19:00 Vilen Künnapu will open an art exhibition “Nudes in Architecture” based on his latest work at the Sepikoja Gallery in the PÕHJALA Factory (Marati 5, Tallinn).

“Kopli's metaphysics continues to excite people of both new and older generations. I remember when we walked about 50 years ago with Andres Tolts, Ando Keskküla and Juhan Viiding between Kopli's tin garages, concrete towers, limestone semi-classicist house noises, an abandoned tram car or factory chimney in the background. The emotion that gripped us was indescribable. Today, when my brilliant friends are already on the other side, I take the same walk and feel the same. The spirit of the place, Genius Loci, is not old.

The Põhjala Quarter and the Sepikoja Gallery also enjoy this harsh and powerful romance of Kopli. I wish here to exhibit my large-scale paintings. Basically architecture, but also some female nudes. What is architecture without a human and their body? They would just stop being.

I love simple and powerful shapes, clean colours, geometry and signs. It's always there sun, sea, tree, cloud, bird, fish, cube and sphere. The woman also looks like a big house or ship in the picture. A woman with elements of her body is a portal to a sensual world - a world of mystery. But my houses are also sensual, sometimes even erotic. I think I am continuing the earthly melody of my deceased friends with the paintings - our common melody. You might even say, the exhibition is a dedication to them,” says Vilen Künnapu, the author of the exhibition.

The exhibition will be open until February 28. The Sepikoja hall of the PÕHJALA galleries is open Mon-Fri 10:00-17:00. It is possible to visit the exhibition at other times by agreement with the curator.
