“And After” by Tuukka Kaila

29.09.2023

On Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 6 pm, the solo exhibition “And After” by Tuukka Kaila will open in Draakon Gallery. The exhibition takes place in the framework of the Tallinn
Photomonth satellite program. An artist talk will take place at the exhibition on Saturday, October 7 at 4 pm.

In a gathering of some recent ideas and objects, this is one way how things could turn
out. And After continues the artist's work around knowledges arising from various curiosity based systems.

Tuukka Kaila

Tuukka Kaila is a Helsinki based artist operating in the expanded fields of photography and publishing. He is a co-founder of the artist-run publishing initiative Rooftop Press and a long time active member of the artists' darkroom co-op Värinä.

Since the late 1990s, Kaila has been actively involved in the development of independent publishing houses, artist-run projects and other self-organizing cultural production forms within and outside of institutions. Kaila's work as an artist has been consistently focused on enabling a learning experience, which is accompanied by active participation and directing art production and distribution methods into the hands of the artists themselves. He is the co-founder of numerous projects such as Numero Zine (1998-2004), publishing event "Bookies" (2012-), Vallilan risopaja micro press (2017-) and Rooftop Press (2017- ) and a member of Värinä darkroom co-op (2002-) and Myyälla2 Gallery (2003– ).

Tuukka Kaila's work mostly takes the form of photos, texts and public events. Kaila's works are based on questions related to the production of knowledge and are completed in an organic process that includes a wide range of different art forms and epistemological strategies, including dialogues, practice-based research, technical experimentation in the darkroom, and printed materials.
