Marju Bormeister’s “Born to Be a Master” Opens a Door into the Artist’s World

In Marju Bormeister’s paintings, we encounter familiar characters, moments and everyday settings — yet each time they appear in a new guise. Her painted world is immediately recognisable, while at the same time constantly shifting and revealing new layers. Every work carries the artist’s attentive gaze upon life as it is lived: upon people, encounters and the situations that make up our everyday existence.

It is difficult to define Bormeister’s artistic practice through a single theme or keyword. For her, painting is not merely one form of self-expression among many. She inhabits painting. She lives to paint, and paints in order to live. Painting is her bloodstream, her heartbeat, the oxygen in her lungs. It is not something that entered her life at a later stage, but something that has been part of her from the very beginning — something she was born with.
For Bormeister, art does not exist as a separate realm removed from everyday life. It is a natural way of being, woven into the ordinary rhythms of daily existence.

The exhibition Born to Be a Master invites the viewer to step into this world — right into the kitchen and the living room, into spaces that are intimate, familiar and close to everyday experience. Seen through the artist’s eyes, familiar characters and ordinary situations begin to reveal something unexpected. The everyday and recognisable can, in the space of a painting, acquire an entirely new presence and meaning.

Born to Be a Master offers an intimate glimpse into an artistic world in which life and painting are inseparable — where the ordinary becomes a source of discovery, and the familiar opens onto something new.
