Sandra Kosorotova is working in the WIELS residency, Brussels

In July, Sandra Kosorotova began her six-month residency in WIELS, the art centre in Brussels. The residency for Estonian artists is made possible by the partnership between WIELS and Estonian Centre for Contemporary Art.

The duration of the WIELS artist in residence programme is six months and its aim is to support artists’ professional development. The residents have access to workshops, panels, and feedback discussions. The artist has the possibility to live in an apartment in Brussels and work at a separate studio space. With the support of Estonian Ministry of Culture, CCA pays the participants monthly scholarship.

Sandra Kosorotova (1984) is an artist focusing on the critique of neoliberalism, possibilities of (self-)care, and sustainability. She often works with plants, textile, text and people. In 2020 she started running the community garden in Narva art residency. She has studied fashion design at the Estonian Academy of Arts (MA 2016) and exhibited at the first Riga International Biennale of Contemporary Art (2018), Kim? Art Center in Riga (2020), PUBLICS (2021), Kumu art museum (2020, 2021), EKKM (2021) and Tallinn Art Hall (2021). Kosorotova has designed artist books and created exhibition designs.

During her stay at WIELS Sandra is being both productive and reflective. In the course of the first half of the residency and while receiving the valuable feedback from mentors and fellow artists she developed a new video work, which is now on view at the Artishok Biennial at the Tallinn Botanical Garden until 30 October 2022. Through the weekly discussions at the residency and visits to the local exhibitions Sandra encounters various ways of making and thinking about art, allowing her to discover and establish new approaches within her own practice.

Since 2018 the programme has hosted Estonian artists Paul Kuimet, Jaanus Samma, Anna Škodenko, Tõnis Saadoja, Tanja Muravskaja, Anu Vahtra, Eva Mustonen and Ingel Vaikla. In the first half of 2022, Krista Mölder was working in Brussels. Residents are selected via an open call.
