Open Call! Residency for creating an urban installation in Narva

The Narva Art Residency is launching an open call to create an urban installation that will enrich and diversify Narva city centre. The winner of the competition will be invited to the residency for one and a half months and the author will receive a creative grant of €2000 and a budget to cover the production costs of the installation. The competition is organised in cooperation with the Narva city government's department of architecture and urban planning and with the support of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2024.  

The call is inspired by the theme of this year's TAB – “Resources for the Future”. Narva's chief architect Peeter Tambu said "We are looking for works that draw people's attention to the value of materials, their durability, recycling and reuse. Ideas should be based on the principles of accessibility of materials from Narva or its surroundings."

On the other hand, the urban installation will transform and enrich the space where people spend their daily lives. Narva's public space has been a topic of discussion in recent years. Questions were raised about whether and what kind of new landmarks could be created instead of Soviet-era monuments. The new installation will have a positive message and will contribute to the urban space of Narva, potentially serving as a new monument.

Tambu added that “the solution of the installation could highlight and emphasize the location itself, bringing out its values in an exciting way.” The call for entries proposes three locations, and the applicant will choose one of them: 1) Stockholm Square behind the Town Hall, 2) the pedestrian area along Paul Keres square (Narva ring road), 3) and the green area near the Hahn stairs at the Pimeaed park.

The application must be submitted online by 12.04 at 23.59 (Estonian time) at the latest. The creative residency will take place from 13.05. until 30.05.2024. The installation should be completed during the residency, but the final deadline is 30 July. The author of the installation is also expected to conduct workshops for local young people, in other words, to involve them in the process of making the installation. The installation will be part of a TAB satellite programme in the autumn of 2024.
