Internship in the Estonian Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale

09.12.2021

The Estonian Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) is offering internship positions for the Estonian Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. The duration of the internship is two months, the applicant chooses the period within April until the end of November 2022.

The tasks include: guarding the pavilion and introducing the Estonian Pavilion exhibition, Estonia and Estonian art, selling catalogs, keeping the pavilion in working order and mediating what is happening at the exhibition grounds to the CCA team. There might be also a small performative role the guards are expected to fulfill.

There would be 3 interns in Venice at once, 2 of whom would guard the pavilion during one day. The work is part-time, which grants the intern the opportunity to get acquainted with the Venice Biennale as well as all other exhibitions opened in the city of Venice. If interested, there is also a possibility for the intern to contribute with the production before the opening of the biennial.

We expect that the internship candidate:
- Is fluent in English; knowledge of other languages, especially Italian, is an advantage
- Has knowledge on Estonian art and culture scene
- Is motivated to introduce the exhibition, Estonia and its cultural scene to the visitors
- Works well independently as well as together with others
- Is open to having performative elements in their work in the pavilion

We offer:
- Experience in an international artistic cooperation project
- Possibility of residence in Venice

If you are interested, please send your CV and motivation letter in English to Simona Sulnyte (opencall@cca.ee) by January 16, 2022.

The intern applies for ERASMUS + traineeship grant through their university. The grant varies according to the university. The grant is also eligible for 2022 graduates. Students who complete their internship will receive university EAP/ECTS. For this call, CCA has previous agreements with Estonian Academy of Arts and Pallas University of Applied Sciences. It is also possible to apply from other universities.

The Venice Biennale is the oldest and largest art event in the world. Estonia has been participating with its pavilion since 1997 and for the upcoming, 59th Venice Biennale, Estonia exhibits a project by Kristina Norman and Bita Razavi titled “Orchidelirium: An Appetite for Abundance“ (curated by Corina L. Apostol), inspired by Emily Rosaly Saal ‘s (1871-1954) watercolours and paintings of tropical plants. The exposition of the Estonian pavilion in Venice opens on April 23, 2022 and is hosted at the historic Dutch pavilion in the Biennale’s main exhibition grounds in Giardini.

The part-time internship program is an opportunity for students to gain work experience and become acquainted with the international art field, and is part of CCA’s goal to create more paid internship opportunities within the cultural field. Estonian students have been working regularly in Venice Biennale’s Estonian Pavilion since 2013.
