"Through Salty Water" by Johanna Mudist

30.07.2025

On August 6 at 16.00, Johanna Mudist's solo exhibition "Through Salty Water" will open at Kuressaare Raegalerii.

Johanna Mudist's solo exhibition "Through Salty Water" at Kuressaare Raegalerii presents the artist's most recent work. In her paintings, the human and the sea meet — two elements that are inseparable on the island of Saaremaa. One always arrives on the island through water. The salty sea remains behind, yet it also stays within the body — on the skin, in the hair, and in the thoughts.

Water, as a recurring motif, creates connections — between the mainland and the island, the body and nature, one person and another. It is a bond that endures, even when physical presence fades. Mudist's paintings invite viewers to sense how the invisible ties between people and place continue to flow within us.

In her work, the artist explores human relationships, belonging, connection, and isolation — as well as their opposites: contact, entanglement, and unity. Nature often appears as a third presence in the paintings, adding layers of meaning through its elements. The boundaries between humans and nature frequently blur, either through form or through ambiguous titles, emphasizing our constant interconnectedness with the world.

The exhibition "Through Salty Water" is inspired by the artist's personal experiences and memories of spending summers on Saaremaa. Here, water appears in many forms — as tears, rain, seawater, or urine. It is not merely a natural element, but also a poetic extension of the body and emotions — a bridge between the inner and outer worlds.

The exhibition will be open from August 7 to September 6.

The exhibition is supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment.

The exhibition is part of Kuressaare Maritime Days' programme.
