The handover of the CCA video archive to the Film Archive of the National Archives of Estonia
On June 14, the Estonian Center of Contemporary Art hands its video archive over to deposit it in the the Film Archive of the Estonian National Archive with the aim of securing its preservation, the visibility and accessibility of artists’ video work.
The celebration of the handover of the video archive is introduced by the video work “The Bridge” by artist Tõnis Jürgens. The work can be seen on Monday, June 12, every full hour on the large-scale screens on Freedom Square and the Nordic Hotel Forum. Jürgens’ work is based on the audiovisual archival materials of film director Marko Raat.
On Wednesday, June 14 at 17:00 everyone is invited to the formal handover of the materials at the Film Archive (Ristiku 84). During the event, compositions based on working with archives and forgotten materials will be presented in the indoor and outdoor area of the Film Archive. Gerda Nurk creates a lecture-performance, incited from the completed and unfinished works of Ando Keskküla and Helena Keskküla. Lauri Lest presents an associative live broadcast of database search engines. Among them, it is possible to watch a video by Romanian artist and former director of the Soros Center for Contemporary Art Romania, Călin Dan, about the emotional architectural work of Linnahall, and the physical version of Tõnis Jürgens’ video work. The program has been curated by Marika Agu, project manager and curator of the CCA archive.
The cooperation between CCA and the National Archive of Estonia began with the need to provide safe preservation for CCA’s contemporary art archive. The cooperation is derived from the competency of the Film Archive for preserving audiovisual archives. With CCA’s video archive, the Film Archive expands its field of activities, now also including art projects in moving image. As a result of joint effort, CCA can make artists’ work more visible and accessible. From 2023, it will be possible to familiarise with the 170 authors and 800 video works presented in the archive. In addition to the CCA’s website, the works will now be available for viewing in the information system, Meediateek, which contains Estonian photo, film and sound collections from the end of the 19th century to the present. CCA’s video archive contains both video artworks and documentations of performances and exhibitions. Archive materials can be viewed by enquiry.
