“Ordinary Worlds“ by Toomas Kuusing

07.07.2025

On July 9th at 7:00 PM, Toomas Kuusing’s solo exhibition Ordinary Worlds will open at Okapi Gallery

The exhibition Ordinary Worlds presents Toomas Kuusing’s latest selection of oil paintings as well as black-and-white and color graphic works. Characterized by theatrical scenes, stylized portraits, and allegorical imagery, the artist’s distinctive visual language explores the absurdities of modern society and the shifting role of the individual within it. Through grotesque humor and irony, Kuusing creates vivid narratives that reflect the tensions and paradoxes of contemporary life.

Toomas Kuusing (b. 1976) graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Estonian Academy of Arts. His creative practice spans painting, printmaking, and performance art. Since 2001, he has been a member of the internationally active art collective Non Grata and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Germany, the United States, South Korea, and across Europe.

His works are part of several esteemed public collections, including the Art Museum of Estonia, Tartu Art Museum, the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils (Latvia), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Yerevan (Armenia), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago (Chile), and the Guanlan Printmaking Museum in Shenzhen (China). He is also known for illustrating the Võro-language version of Kalevipoeg and was awarded third place at the Kaunas International Print Biennial in 2023.

The exhibition offers a multi-layered experience – a visual richness intertwined with sharp social commentary and Kuusing’s signature mythological undertones. Ordinary Worlds will be open from July 9th to 28th at Okapi Gallery.
