PHILLY JOE’S
Vabaduse Väljak 10, Tallinn
In Arne Maasik's photographs, the American metropolis of New York opens up more as states of mind than as city.
These are spaces where a house does not seem to be just an object, but also the idea of the object itself.
Such an idea does not presuppose just one object, because there are so many different objects to carry the idea and are so closely together. In such a density, architecture becomes a message - a metal and glass cardiogram of society that towers over people, forces the gaze to the heights while cutting right through them.
The range of oscillation needs space to hide in. It replaces the height of the sky with the height of the architecture, so that the sky, not the building itself, acts as an incision into the whole. In this way, a reality emerges before our eyes that is both concentrated and compartmentalised.
