International printmaking exhibition “Prints expanding into space”

02.11.2020

ARS Project Space 5.11.20-28.11-20

Printed matter endlessly repeats the image we find in its matrix.

The human psyche tends to amplify the mechanisms which spread certain knowledge necessary to certain people.

The ideologies move the masses; it is easy to generate biases and hysteria as demonstrated in this contemporary age.

In a world distracted by a pandemic fear, we need extra space, both around us and inside us.

The prints in this exhibition have expanded out of a mere two-dimensional image. The exhibition enables artists to explore space and the different aspects of spatial perception - the density and tenuous, the public, personal and physical, the real and the illusional.

By using the techniques available to us in printmaking, we try to add a third dimension to the flat surface. We want to explore how a simple work of art can describe the depth of the spatial world. Experiments are ongoing!

Space generated in graphics mutations – installations.

The selected artists have become familiar with each other’s works, in both technical and essential sense. The meetings in Muhu Print* have included experiments and inspiring co-work. The traditional printing techniques are experiencing changes and the viral distribution of printed art can become chronic.

This new wave of graphics has been manifesting within Estonia for some time now!

*Muhu Print is celebrating its 6th birthday this summer. It is an annual 7-day event held on the island of Muhu, bringing together an international group of various artists. Muhu Print shares both forgotten and new printmaking methods, so the artists can further create and teach their own unique techniques.

It is due to Muhu Print´s important role that printmaking tends to spread so fast.
